We knew chart-topping JAMES BLUNT was posh, and he's spoken of the trials of being an officer at Sandhurst. But family historian ROBERT BARRETT discovered a background of Cavaliers, Roundheads and stately homes more distinguished than the You're Beautiful singer ever revealed
Singer-songwriter James Blunt, who this month became the first Briton to top the U.S.
singles chart since Elton John with Candle In The Wind in 1997, may be the epitome of 21st-century chic, but he has an aristocratic ancestry stretching right back to the Middle Ages.
James's earliest ancestor can be traced to 995AD and, by the 16th century, the Blunts, or Blounts, were Catholic baronets in Worcestershire and Herefordshire. The family was divided by the sword in the 1640s Civil War, fighting as both Cavaliers and Roundheads.
Trading as tanners in Bromyard, Herefordshire, for five generations, they were Nonconformists.
There is a monument in Bromyard church erected to John Blount (1755-1834).
John prospered in tanning, buying Lea Hall, a stately home in Yardley, Worcestershire. He became a magistrate and married heiress Martha Synge of Bridgnorth, an ancestor of the Irish writer J. M. Synge, author of The Playboy Of The Western World.
Their only son, John Synge Blount (died 1856) was a surgeon based in Birmingham who was left property by two Bromyard sisters named Hillier. James still carries their name today.
James and his father, Colonel Charles Blount, are the latest in an unbroken five generations of military men in the Blount family, starting with John Synge Blount's grandson, Major Charles Hubert Blount (1855-1900), who served in the Boer War in the Royal Horse Artillery (he died of dysentery at Wynberg, South Africa), through to James's own Army career in the 13th/18th Hussars, in which regiment his father and grandfather also served. James's mother, Jane, has brought to his ancestry more military muscle: her father, Colonel Amos from Wilton, Wiltshire, served in the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers and his uncle, David Amos, commanded the 13th/18th Hussars.
James' paternal grandmother, Polly Barclay, came from two famous Quaker families, the Gurneys, who included prison reformer Elizabeth Fry, and the Barclays, who founded the bank that still bears their name.
